This exhibition marks 25 years since I graduated as a visual arts major. Focusing on surface design, I have taken a fluid approach to media and techniques, experimenting according to my needs. A creative block left me wondering whether my inspiration had evaporated. The Argentum exhibition rejuvenated my practice – an elemental free-flow of ideas took on botanical qualities, as tendrils reached out to new forms of expression while roots burrowed deeper into my own history than ever before.

Argentum : Latin for silver, celebrates 25 years of “cross-pollination”  …  a silver jubilee of sorts.

Inner City: the glass towers, their reflected surfaces and changing forms – Inner Self: concerns of feelings; vulnerability, determination & commitment

Using three photographs, (depicting two prominent inner city buildings) as source material, the works evolve around the resultant strong visual images. Works include Artists Books and framed Collage using photographs, some photocopied & digitally manipulated with hand and machine stitched handmade (fibre) papers, silk & cotton fabrics.

Access to the photocopies of Cannon Australia for 6 months allowed for experimentation with manipulating and reconstructing photographic images using their coloured & black & white photocopiers. This work represents part of the results of this experimentation.

The harsh and desolate landscape of the Australian outback had a lasting effect; these works attempt to represent the experiences of the women who ventured into that environment, accompanying men who sought their fortune there

Inspired by my photographs of the textures, colours & aspects of the central Australian landscape, the works included Artists books, Wall Quilts and mounted Collage. Techniques and materials included dyed, airbrushed and painted silk & cotton fabrics, stitched with paper, photographs and found objects.

Wall Quilts, framed Embroidery & Mixed Media artworks were inspired by one photographic image – the rail bridge at Indooroopilly. Works include digitally manipulated images printed to paper, and transfer printed to cotton & silk fabric, some embellished with found objects and machine pieced & quilted cotton fabric.

Experimentation of these process led to Sharyn’s Churchill Fellowship Award; to study the transfer of photographic images to fabric in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in 2001.

Display of five synthetic fabric lengths, each dye-sublimation repeat printed with digitally manipulated photographic images, using disperse dyes.

These dyed fabric lengths form part of the artworks which resulted from the research and study undertaken as part of the Churchill Fellowship Award.

Wild Things was again a fantastic success this year. Wendy Bailye and I joined forces for the 4th year in a row, bringing together an eclectic array of wearable and decorative artworks made from all sorts of fibre, textiles and paper.
